“Madeira is a garden!” No wonder that this is one of the main slogans being used in numerous advertising campaigns of our island. In 2000, Madeira won the prestigious award “European Flowering City 2000”.

Madeira Botanical Garden
The Madeira Botanical Garden - Eng. Rui Vieira is one of the most iconic gardens of our island. It is a must visit place and the proof of that is the 350 000 annual visitors.
The Garden presents itself with a 35 000 m2 area and more than 2,000 exotic plants from all around the world, some of them endangered. A “Natural History Museum (15 000 specimens), the “Loiro Park” (with about 500 exotic birds from 60 different species such as parrots and macaws), a herbarium (with 24 000 specimens of plants), and a viewpoint where you can admire a magnificent view over the city of Funchal. The Madeira Botanical Garden is located only 3 km from the city of Funchal and can get there by a cable car.

Funchal Municipal Garden
The Funchal Municipal Garden is probably the most known garden by our tourists. This is due to its location right at the city center next to Avenida Arriaga, a place of obligatory passage.
The Municipal Garden, formerly known as “Donna Amélia Garden”, is located in the same place where once existed the S. Francisco Convent. The garden features a small lake, a stream with ducks and swans, plants from various parts of the world, a terrace bar and an amphitheater where events throughout the year related to the culture and traditions of our island occur.

"Quinta Vigia" Garden
The “Quinta Vigia” garden, formerly known as “Quinta das Angústias” due to the chapel built in the sixteenth century who called on “Nossa Senhora das Angustias” is Regional Government of Madeira current official residence.
Quinta Vígia has undergone several phases of construction since the sixteenth century until the nineteenth century.It is based on baroque and neoclassical civil architecture. It resided several peronalidades as Adelaide the Queen of England, Elizabeth the Empress of Austria, the Prince of Oldenburg, Amelia the Empress of Brazil and her daughter Maria Amélia, who died here in 1853.
This garden also has a viewpoint where you can admire the sea and Funchal bay. The Quinta Vigia gardem is open to the public.

Santa Catarina Park
Santa Catarina Park with 36 000m2, located between Avenida Sá Carneiro and Avenida do Infante, is certainly one of the nicest places of Funchal. The park has flowers from all around the world and a small pond with swans and ducks. You can find some statues of important figures such as Cristovão Colombo and D. Henrique. There is also a playground for children.
One of the main attractions of this park is the St. Catherine Chapel (“Capela de Santa Catarina”), the oldest one in the whole island. It was built in 1425 by order of D. Constança, João Gonçalves Zarco wife.
The slope of Santa Catarina Park, creates an amphitheater that often serves to host artistic and cultural events. This inclination also offers a panoramic view over Funchal bay to the Garajau.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden, located on Monte Palace Estate (José Berardo foundation) is one of the most enriching places from a cultural point of view, that you can visit in Madeira Islands. Our advice is that you take the cable car from the the historic part of Funchal (“Zona Velha”) and enjoy the spectacular view that this journey has to offer.
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden features more than 100 000 species of plants from different countries, a Koi pond, a magnificent collection of rare tiles, an oriental garden, contemporary african sculpture, a colection of minerals from various parts of the world, and much more.
